Course Description

What is this course all about?

  • Over the course of 7 modules, I will provide you with a fast track “Art School” experience! You will learn all the most important art and design foundations, as well as shortcuts and techniques to improve your portfolio and create more professional pieces.

Who is this class designed for?

  • Anyone planning to pursue art professionally, improve their hobby, or just get a jump start before heading off to a formal art school. I guarantee you'll be ahead of the game!

Why take this course?

  • I went to art school, so you don't have to! Formal art education has become increasingly expensive and out of reach for many aspiring artists, and I want to provide a fun and informative alternative! I designed this course to include not only the traditional elements of art education, but all so the most important skills and tools I've discovered post art school. I hope to put a refreshing spin on the core foundations, while creating a welcoming, non-competitive environment for artists of all levels and backgrounds.

Bottom Line?

  • I created this course to embody the course I always wanted to take but could never find! I hope you'll take this creative journey with me and join me on board the, “Art School Express.”

What are the requirements?

  • All materials are OPTIONAL. Materials & mediums will be explored in the course, and students can choose which they'd like to purchase.
  • Previous art classes are helpful but NOT REQUIRED. This class is open to all levels.

What am I going to get from this course?

  • Over 60 lectures and 6 hours of content!
  • Create illustrations that utilize the fundamentals of style, design, composition, and color theory.
  • Effectively use reference photos and digital tools to improve perspective and anatomy.
  • Use the professional illustration process to communicate and work with clients.
  • Manage work time and meet deadlines.
  • Apply instructor critiques to their own work, and critique the work of other students.

What is the target audience?

  • All art skill levels, mediums and styles are welcome.
  • This course is for any artist planning to pursue art professionally, improve their hobby, or prepare for formal art education. This course is designed to be a fast track "art school" overview that focuses on fundamentals.
  • This course is NOT for those looking for specific training in figure drawing, painting, or other in depth techniques.
  • This course is intended to be "self guided." Instructor will provide TWO formal critiques over the entirety of the course. Students are expected to comment and critique each other if more feedback is desired.

I just signed up and am completing my first assignments for Leilani's classes. I've been a fan of hers on YouTube for over a year and really wanted to take her classes but wasn't sure because of cost and whether I should "take the plunge." It was a commitment I knew I'd need to take seriously. After hearing from so many artists that you need to learn the foundations first to become a great artist, I finally decided that the portfolio lessons she offers would be worth the money and time commitment. I knew from watching her videos online and purchasing some of her artwork that she provides quality and attention to detail to her customers. She is very meticulous and discerning when it comes to her artwork and video content. Since it's my birthday today and I'd received an email promotion from her website, I decided it was serendipity ... I didn't go to art school although I have enjoyed mixed media and always had a creative streak. Recently, I made a few paintings that were getting positive feedback online - even some people asking to buy my work which completely surprised me! - but as soon as that started happening I started putting more pressure on myself, and art began feeling like a confusing chore. Were those few "good" pieces just a fluke? It got to the point where I hit a wall. I decided I needed to take a break but there was still that spark in me to create. I want to create art that is fun to make and makes other people happy. Then, in Leilani's most recent paint-a-long video, she discussed again - and her boyfriend chimed in - how important it is to learn the basics! I realized if I wanted to get better and more consistent, I had to take action. So far, I'm only an 1/8 or so into the course. Leilani makes each part easy to understand and it is very well organized. Also, my familiarity with her work and work style enriches the experience. I am going to take it slow, as she advises, and really let the lessons sink in. She also provides very helpful extra resources and a range of product recommendations (art supplies, books, instructional videos) that are all optional but give good guidelines in a range of prices. I love that there is a forum to connect with other students and that you can refer back to lessons you already watched when you need a refresher. I totally sound like a fangirl (which I am) but I definitely recommend this to anyone creative! She is fun to watch and has years of experience, plus she went to art school and is making a living as an artist - a dream life in my opinion! Also, she is down to earth, makes it approachable, and is funny to boot. Highly recommended!

I've been a fan of Leilani's video's on youtube for a while now, and once she announced she was going to do an art course I just know I had to join. This makes me a bit biased, but I absolutely loved the course! I did art & design in college, and I was never told about the golden ratio, or the rule of thirds nor did we go over perspective. I feel like this course gave me what I was looking for when I did the art course at college. I have gone through all the videos and I have learned so much! I am so much more aware of my work and how I can make things work better. I myself have not done the assignments yet, but I have seen other people post theirs on Udemy and Leilani has almost always responded and given great tips. I like that everyone else chimes in too, it's really great! The course is full of good tips and tricks, and I love that she even included resources to find out more about certain media's or other artists. It shows that Leilani put a lot of work into this course! Definitely recommend it!
